The president made some comments this week. I probably wouldn’t have even heard about them except that I have a number of conservative friends on Facebook and they were alllll wigged out. These were the comments:

“Sometimes, someone, usually mom, leaves the workplace to stay home with the kids, which then leaves her earning a lower wage for the rest of her life as a result. And that’s not a choice we want Americans to make.”

I would not have thought twice about this because it seems obvious that he is saying that this is not a choice we want Americans to have to make. It’s not awesome that there are women who stay home only because it’s cheaper than going to a job because daycare is so expensive and women make less money than men. It’s not okay that mom choosing to stay  home with her children for a while results in lower wages when she returns to work.
But of course conservative twitterverse is all in uproar. Well, this SAHM is not. You know what he meant and claiming otherwise is dishonest.

About Just Vegas

I'm a 30-something married SAHM which means the nightmare scenario that plagued my early 20's has become reality. Funny thing is, I kinda like it. I have 3 lovely daughters who are educated at home and at a part-time alternative school. I love animals and I love people (in the general sense, not everybody all the time). I have no income to speak of, I'm not crafty and I hate cooking. My skills include reading the internet, watching tv on the internet and conversing with people on the internet. I'm an armchair philosopher, spiritualist, agnostic, feminist, liberal, activist, political pundit and tv critic.

Truth. Why let facts get in the way of a good spot of outrage, right?

It’s an election year, Vegas. The President is stumping for his Party. He’s got friends ($$$) in Rhode Island…two House seats are up for grabs…there’s a tight race for governor…and Rhode Island has one of the worst..if not the worst…labor markets in the nation, (7.7% official unemployment, U6 underemployment/unemployment rate at 14.4% with 44.6% of the unemployed long-term, without a job for more than 27 weeks). The federal government just wrote a big check to help do…?something?…about that, so Obama is pretty much obligated to show up and blow some smoke up whatever orifices are available. Reasonable people shouldn’t take what he says seriously.
    Unless he bombing somebody.

That totally makes sense that way to me, too. I read it as “We don’t want a person to have to choose between a good wage and staying home with children.”
