Savage “It Gets Better”

Dan Savage has created a YouTube channel for gay teens called, “It Gets Better”.

Since not every teenager facing these challenges is going to write in for advice, and since many rural schools don’t offer programs to support gay and lesbian teens, Savage launched the channel to reach more people in need of support.

He and his husband made the first video:

About Just Vegas

I'm a 30-something married SAHM which means the nightmare scenario that plagued my early 20's has become reality. Funny thing is, I kinda like it. I have 3 lovely daughters who are educated at home and at a part-time alternative school. I love animals and I love people (in the general sense, not everybody all the time). I have no income to speak of, I'm not crafty and I hate cooking. My skills include reading the internet, watching tv on the internet and conversing with people on the internet. I'm an armchair philosopher, spiritualist, agnostic, feminist, liberal, activist, political pundit and tv critic.

I personally know that there are LOTS of wonderful people who are gay. I have a gay Aunt, a gay Uncle, and a gay cousin, and in 5th grade I had a gay teacher…at a Catholic school mind you (who was seeing my cousin) and when I was in high school and my parents moved away and I stayed in Vandalia to finish school I lived with my gay cousin and 5th grade teacher. I have worked with some amazing gay people and have made good friends. Although I don’t agree with the gay lifestyle and I don’t condone it, and I beleive that God does not condone it either, I don’t believe that anyone should be persecuted because of their lifestyle choices. It makes me feel horrible to think that these men suffered the way they did in high school.

What is a gay lifestyle? Is there a straight lifestyle? I don’t understand.

      • Beth says:

Ummm..the unnatural way that 2 men or 2 women are together intimately. This is the gay lifestyle I am referring to. THIS IS NOT of God, as we are commanded to multiply and replenish the earth. This is not possible in a gay relationship (adoption and artificial insemination are not included!). My Aunt adopted two twin girls a year and a half ago. She’s now concerned about them not having male role models in their lives due to her “lifestyle”. This is obviously not what God intended for children to grow up with! She’s asked us to get together with her and the girls once a month so that they can see and be a part of a family with a Father and a Mother. Hmmm… We are also listed in her will as guardians of the girls should anything ever happen to her and her partner. We love the girls and my aunt and her partner, we don’t agree with their lifestyle, but we are accepting of them as family and as friends!

I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. I find any loving, committed relationship to be exactly what God or nature intends for us. Love is love.
If procreation were part of the package then those who can’t conceive would be considered in sin as well. Love and sex were given by God as a way for humans to connect not solely as a means to procreate.
I can tolerate someone “not agreeing with a lifestyle” as long as it’s not singled out. I am certain that there are many aspects of my own life that you would find objectionable and I am comfortable with that because you have shown me love and friendship anyway. I hope it is the same with this, I hope that this one particular “sin” is not one that is singled out as worse than any others.

Woah! Unnatural? Wow. So single parents should be stoned? And not including IVF and adoption completely undermines your “natural” argument.

What about my lifestyle? I’m a bisexual woman married to a man and we have 2 children. Is that against God or is ok since my partner is a man?

Seriously. “Lifestyle” is such an obnoxious term.

Stop thinking of God as some Man or Woman barking commands and just thing of the word Love when you say the name, “God.” God is love. Love has no rules.

  3. Beth says:

Oh Sarah, I have no problem with agreeing to disagree. I only went further in my “explanation” because GiGi asked me what I meant. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. One of the greatest things in this life is that we have our own free agency and the ability to choose what we do , think, believe, feel and say. I’m sure there are MANY things in my life and my beliefs that you would disagree with too and I don’t care. I love you anyway, and I have no doubt the same goes for you! I have strong convictions and I choose to live my life a certain way. Just because I feel something is wrong in the eyes of God doesn’t mean I shun anyone or that I think others are evil or bad. I have many friends and family members with many lifestyles and beliefs and I love them all no matter how different they are from what I believe.

  4. GiGi says:

Life goes on for you, Beth, but for many LGBTQ folks it is complicated and sometimes ruined by people who think like you do. That’s why I get “bent.” I’ll stop now, however….
